De Novo

Just as the Daejon newspaper was charmed, so too was the local newspaper, the Times Herald Record. This is a clipping is from December 1967. And, yes, my mother would soon go on to change her American nickname from Tony to Vickie. For those of us who remember the "big store", who among us could resist the allure of Sullivan's Department Store?!

Mom didn't know how to drive a car before coming to America. I think this was probably Dad's version of training wheels.

Here she is about a year after arriving in Liberty, NY with her new in-laws~ my great-grandmother, grandparents, aunts, uncles and two of my cousins.

37 years later, it's hard to imagine a time when Mom didn't know how to drive a car, cook a Thanksgiving turkey, make chicken noodle soup or scoop an ice cream cone and dip it in rainbow sprinkles.
